Wherever you turn your eyes, there is no portion of the world, however minute, that does not exhibit at least some sparks of beauty, while it is impossible to contemplate the vast and beautiful fabric as it extends around, without being overwhelmed by the immense weight of glory. Echoes of Eden- J. Barrs Our recent handcraft had spring in mind. After decorating pots with chalkboard paint and decoupage we headed over to a local greenhouse and learned how to propagate plants. We ended up boiling down 40 gallons of sap over the fire on a gorgeous spring day with friends!
My conservative estimates were way off. There are now 10 1/2 pints of pure awesomeness in the pantry! There are approx. 25 gallons of sap in refrigeration here at the moment awaiting a big boil down in the morning. My little sap collecting helper and I go out in the afternoon and pray we don't run into Jimmy Skunk who's been slinking around somewhere, hiding nearby the past few days. Yeah, the live trap is out. We're pretty sure Mr. Badger and Johnny Chuck are awake by the looks of things. Warm weather and robins! have arrived, the dead flies I missed in the window sills started buzzing again and I'm trying to keep up with all the mud, the revamped morning lessons, the long hours of outdoor play that are BACK!, and the many big spring plans for the TLC we are giving this farm. 65 degrees feels A-mazing! Chapter 56 of Child's History of the World happened this week.
We were inspired by the great little story about 12th century cathedral architecture and noticed some similarities to our family's barn. Then we watched this video about the building of a Cathedral. Love this book too! This late in winter many feel the need for something to carry them through until spring. Too many days indoors, and I'm searching for something to spice up the days. Meandering, tunneling and sliding through an ice castle with red-cheeked little boys, as well as a lovely new entry in my commomplace notebook were two recent late-winter boosts. Come, pluck up, heart, let's neither faint nor fear.
Better though difficult, the right way to go, Than wrong, though easy, where the end is woe. To go back is nothing but death, to go forward is fear of death, and life everlasting beyond it. I will yet go forward. I am sure to be in safety there: I must venture. Pilgrim's Progress Blow boisterous Wind, stern Winter frown,
Innocence is a Winter's gown; So clad, we'll abide life's pelting storm That makes our limbs quake, if our hearts be warm. William Blake Have you discovered kinetic sand? It's quite therapeutic. "Now imagination does not descend, full grown, to take possession of an empty house; like every other power of the mind, it is the merest germ of a power to begin with, and grows by what it gets; and childhood, the age of faith, is the time for its nourishing." Charlotte Mason It may have taken until December to weed out the majority of the frustrating bits in our daily rhythm and get everyone used to the newness of it all, but the near daily giggles and comments like "Is math next?" Me: yes. "Oh, good!" that I hear scattered throughout the lessons, now, let me know that the work to get here has been worth the patience-building I underwent. A pleasantly busy 3yo at his little table, snuggling in my lap, or playing (mostly) contentedly at my knee indicate that hard-to-describe 'something' about the atmosphere is on the right track. Things that help us understand a tough text and not create more busy work are good to share. Here are some helpful resources for our Year 2 book Pilgrim's Progress. By the way, this book is SO GOOD, and even if you do not school littles it is very worth the read for the mental images it conjures and the faith ties. Take your time and soak it in. Audio with unabridged text (if the language is tripping you up, listen instead of reading aloud) Original Text Original Illustrations (don't miss these) Map ideas (Take time to draw your own as you read. Creative or not, it helps!) Retelling Video (I have not watched all of this. You may want to preview?) Spontaneous outdoor 3-D map making is fun too, when it is too windy to play anywhere except right next to the garage.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12 Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, Wears yet a precious jewel in his head; And this our life, exempt from public haunt, Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in every thing. William Shakespeare As You Like It 2.1 |
