I recently read this about being thirsty. So this next photo is for Shanda. Hope you're enjoying the beauty of summer!

I wish I had them on video, because these two baby squirrels had us giggling as we watched out the window!
Don't dig up in doubt what you have planted in faith. ~ Elizabeth Elliot I realized that the deepest spiritual lessons are not learned by His letting us have our way in the end, but by His making us wait, bearing with us in love and patience until we are able to honestly to pray what He taught His disciples to pray: Thy will be done. ~Elizabeth Elliot Today is mine. Tomorrow is none of my business. If I peer anxiously into the fog of the future, I will strain my spiritual eyes so that I will not see clearly what is required of me now.
~Elizabeth Elliot "If thou writest, nothing therein has savour to me unless I read Jesus in it. If thou discoursest, nothing therein is agreeable to me unless in it also Jesus resounds. Jesus is honey to the mouth, melody to the ear, a song of jubilee in the heart." Bernard of Clairvoux Even though I think I've been through these lessons already, I learn something new each time each time we have one of our homeschool gatherings. Sharing inspiring music, poetry, map study, a Shakespeare laugh, conversation and slow handwork with each other is refreshing. Unless the eye catch fire, The God will not be seen. Unless the ear catch fire The God will not be heard. Unless the tongue catch fire The God will not be named. Unless the heart catch fire, The God will not be loved. Unless the mind catch fire, The God will not be known. William Blake- Pentecost Here at home there have been quite a few interesting nature sightings and additions to our Book of Firsts so far this summer. There is just SO much to see and we love surprises, especially when shared with friends. "What subject of systematic study can be better suited to the young child than that which calls out its sense of wonder and beauty, and which in harmony with its own restless nature is ever changing; in which is found endless variety with underlying order?" "Children whose eyes have been opened, will be able to go into the country and note down the things they have observed." quotes taken from this Parent's Review article Little eagle eyes spotted this snapping turtle meandering through the front yard one evening! We looked it up and found out it is time for these ladies to make their trek out of the mud to lay their eggs. She must have laid hers in the soft dirt of the field and been headed back to the chilly water of the lake. Check out the claws and the algae covering the shell. I wonder what winter was like down under the mud this year? I'd love to watch one laying eggs some day, but it sounds like they're quite secretive. Whenever you are creating beauty around you,
you are restoring your own soul. A. Walker "Sunshine is like love... it makes everything shine with its own beauty. You..."
added she, kissing her little girl's fat cheek, "Are stars in my eyes, because I see you in the sunshine of love." Motes in a Sunbeam- Parables of Nature by M. Gatty "I have many beautiful flowers," he said, "but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all." The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde "There is no doubt that the average child is spontaneously interested in the earth. Stones, sand and water- these are the first delights of the toddler. ... once this pleasure is fully appreciated the garden gate is opened to the child; a vista stretches endlessly before him, which can be enjoyed with ever-increasing satisfaction all the days of his life. Let us begin early to cultivate our gardens!" from a PR article Children's Gardens by M. Donovan Make Your Garden! February 1918 "Now is the time to make your garden! Anyone can be a successful gardener at this time of year, and I know if no pleasanter occupation these cold, snowy days than to sit warm by the fire, making garden with a pencil-in a seed catalogue. ...It is so much easier to plan that it is to accomplish... no one ever achieved anything from the smallest object to the greatest unless the dream was dreamed first... ...The dream is only the beginning... When we make our dream gardens, we must take into account the hot sun and the blisters in our hand..." Laura Ingalls Wilder- Little House in the Ozarks "But to get the quintessence of pleasure out of gardening it should be kept definitely as a hobby and not as a labour. ...the garden should be kept as a sanctuary- a citadel of peace. We enter in, and the cares and worries of the world are left outside; here we are only concerned with the care of growing things, rooted solidly in the soil. In a few moments we have forgotten that anything else matters." ( from the PR article by M. Donovan) My gardening inspiration: Alys Fowler-- I love her garden style, and am inspired to try broad beans because of her! The Family Kitchen Garden-- because I'm learning about companion planting this year Some favorite garden stories : "...something definite remains with a child after his studies.
We cannot measure the influence that one or another artist has upon the child's sense of beauty, upon his power of seeing, as in a picture, the common sights of life; he is enriched more than we know in having really looked at even a single picture." CM 1/309 I've said it before and I'll say it again, an art museum through the eyes of a child (age 7 or 3) is just so. much. fun. "Oh, good mother, to whom is entrusted the rearing of a very tender plant, take heed what you teach, and foster in it, above all other virtues, the charity which 'hopeth all things' and then can both believe and endure."
