baby, it's cold out there!

"It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily. "And freezing."
"However," He said, brightening up a little,
"we haven't had an earthquake lately."
Picture
We've been hearing words like 'polar vortex' and 'record lows' and 'wind chill warning' here lately.
Picture
...they say diamond dust is in the air when this happens. At least sun dogs make negative temps beee-u-ti-ful!
Picture
...and you get to do cool science experiments like turn water to steam before it has a chance to hit the ground!

waves in the snow- I love it when it does this!

Outdoor geography- heading out after the storm passed and learning wind direction from the snowy trees
We're working our way through Long's Geography and the questions this week happened to be quite fitting:

Tell all that you can tell about the wind.

What was the direction of the wind during the last snow-storm?
Why is the north wind cold?

My son dictated a lovely little made-up poem in answer to the first question which I promptly wrote into my Mothers Notebook. Love.

tin punch lantern

"The holes in the tin lantern freckled everything with little lights and shadows. Almanzo could see that Father looked solemn; he stroked his beard and slowly shook his head. Almanzo waited anxiously, but Father only took the lantern and made a last round of the barns to see that everything was snug for the night. Then they went into the house."
- Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Our group did this handicraft back in  2011 -tin punch lanterns!!
We read parts of Farmer Boy pg. 19,23. We also read a little history on punched tin.
Our  how-to can be found at this site.
Picture
You probably have most of the supplies needed for this already at home.
A washed out tin can, hammer, nail, awl or screwdriver, paper, pencil and a towel are all you need.

Here's another blog that shows how to do it.
Another idea for tin punching ornaments with pop cans can be found in this book.

This is a great winter handcraft. When you're done making your lantern you can set it out in the snow and watch it glow, or take a moonlit snowy walk under the stars.

Hibernate

With the current temp at -11 and windchill at -37 we've mostly been entertaining ourselves indoors this Christmas and New Year, with the exception of visits with friends and an occasional abbreviated jaunt through the woods or down to the mailbox. The new child-sized snow shovel is already lost in a drift somewhere, sigh. Along with the stories, stories and more stories and a few new presents to play with, here's what's been filling the little minds and hands and tummies at our house.
Picture
"Mom, can I please learn to finger knit?"
He picked some chunky rainbow yarn out of my stash and sat on my lap.
We watched and paused this video several times.
It was a lovely way to spend a frigid afternoon. He's been making 'scarves' and fake beards and moustaches for imaginative play ever since!

Singing Noche Buena and cooking Bunuelos
(Mexican Christmas cookies meaning 'puffs of air') We drizzled ours with honey.

After this read aloud, since we couldn't go in person, we went to
the Nutcracker Balet via youtube with popcorn and everything.
Even the little one still asks me, "Mom-mom, I want it, honey bees."
Slightly different version then the story, but very beautifully done
....and there are dancing bees!

The tree and ornaments had an expedited removal thanks to the curious and
oh-so-busy two year old, so now it's back to regular school and

on to more wintery adventures here at home!
