We saw Venus, which looked like a semi-circle (due to it's current phase- like our moon has phases.) We also saw Jupiter with 2 cloud bands across it, and 3 of its moons!! And we spotted several winter constellations.
This book was our guide. It's about perfect for the novice observer. My 4 yo was really getting into it too. He looked at the picture and then could pick out Orion in the night sky. We even saw his club and shield. Usually all I can spot are his belt and limbs.
We were photographing the Pinwheel Galaxy. It is barely a visible hazy blob to the naked eye.
We took 4 photos each with a different colored filter (red, blue, green and luminescence). Each exposure was 60 seconds long. When the photos were overlaid, this was our resulting shot. You need a good eye and a lot of patience for this kind of thing, but the result is pretty neat, I think! Just imagine how far away it really is!!
